Steve Brown has made his mark in Canada and Internationally by leading organizations through digital transformation. His career spans a diverse mix of industry and technology experience from multi-media entertainment, logistics services, automotive, and now to learning solutions.
Since joining NELSON in September 2016, Steve has transformed the vision for this 104-year-old company by reimagining the role and purpose of a publisher in 2017 and beyond. Introducing a matrix driven view to the management culture, and unifying a K20 student-centric business division is at the core of this shift to a cohesive customer focused structure. He has reframed the organization's digital competency by instituting a technology department comprised of some the world's best and brightest talent based in Silicon Beach California. Additionally, over the past 12 months the company has engaged in various M&A activities, including the acquisition of one of its largest competitors, as well as signing numerous agency and partnership deals to ensure NELSON offers a world class portfolio of learning solution and for all its markets.
Steve's passion and commitment to transforming education, and the student learning experience, continues to fuel the innovation pipeline at NELSON.
Executive Vice President & Managing Director
Jessica Mosher is the Executive Vice President and Managing Director for the School and Higher Education Divisions. She is a veteran of the educational publishing world, with experience designing and executing growth strategies for divisions in both Canada and the US. Jessica started her career with Nelson 20 years ago. She spent 16 years with Pearson, where she established a track record of market and financial success, leading various divisions in the transition from print to digital, and discovering new market opportunities. Jessica is recognized for cultivating high-performance teams, she is passionate about her people and maximizing potential, and encourages a relentless focus on the customer. Jessica is a founding board member of ForGirlSake, a non-profit organization focused on improving the lives of girls through education.
Executive Vice President, Operations
David Ashton is a customer focused and performance driven leader with extensive domestic & international success in building, growing and transforming commercial operations across multiple industries. Leveraging a career of business unit & functional leadership roles within both vertically integrated manufacturing, distribution and service related industries, he is defined by a significant focus on the client, operational excellence and innovation as key business & competitive differentiators.
Senior Vice President, People and Engagement
Jessica Phinn is the Senior Vice President of People and Engagement and Chief Privacy Officer. Ms. Phinn joined Nelson in 2012 and is accountable for overseeing workforce strategy, organizational and performance development, HR services delivery and compliance, and governance regulations within the organization. Ms. Phinn is a bilingual certified human resources leader (CHRL) with over 12 years of experience in the private sector, previously with the Consumer Packaged Goods and Retail and Manufacturing industries, and most recently as a sole proprietor. Ms. Phinn's experience included providing HR direction for Cott Beverages Canada, Pepsi Bottling Group, and Loblaw Companies Limited.
Senior Vice President, Digital Strategy & Technology
Ben Higgins is the Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Technology. Ben joined Nelson in February 2017 to help lead Nelson's digital transformation across all aspects of the business by putting the needs of the students, teachers, and administrators at the centre of product design. He has a passion for leveraging technology to empower teacher practice and to improve student outcomes.
Ben has a proven track record of leading businesses across multiple industries in North America, Europe, and Asia. Starting his career in China, Ben set up and managed several factories providing interior car components for the major automotive manufacturers. He then went on to build an investment consultancy based in Shanghai focusing on outbound investments into Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. After moving back to North America, Ben shifted his focus to developing technology and became the head of strategy and sales for a multinational media company serving the world’s largest entertainment clients. More recently before joining Nelson, Ben was the Managing Director of pan American digital marketing and technology company based in Los Angeles. He is a business graduate from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and is a Mandarin speaker.

Hanna Paper Fibres Ltd. is a leading company in the paper recycling industry across Canada and the United States. For the third year in a row, Nelson has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement for our role in the preservation of our Planet’s diminishing resources.
We recycle all of our waste paper, bottles, cans, and toner cartridges. In fact, as of June 2014, Nelson’s Head Office stopped the sale of water in disposable plastic bottles in an effort to reduce this type of waste. This has saved us from filling approximately 5 garbage trucks a year! Also, in one year, Nelson recycled enough paper to save 19,266 trees and has printed 45 titles on recycled paper. That is 660,392 lbs of recycled material, or roughly the same weight as 44 elephants! The energy saved during the manufacturing process is enough to power 7 homes for a year. We also used 355,697 fewer gallons of water and produced 108,504 lbs less carbon dioxide.
Nelson actively participates in the community through corporate donations and by encouraging employee participation in activities that improve the communities in which we work and live. As a business, we take our social responsibilities seriously. We understand and appreciate the impact of our activities on our customers, suppliers, employees, communities, and the environment. We work very closely with employees, their families, the local community, and society at large to improve their quality of life.
We believe that positive experiences for employees translate into positive experiences for our community. The Company encourages employees to support their local communities and not-for-profit organizations through their volunteer activities. To aid in these activities, Nelson provides employees with paid Volunteer Leave each calendar year to donate their time, talent, and energy to community and/or fundraising events.
Nelson is a proud supporter of Second Harvest, a Toronto-based charitable organization dedicated to hunger relief for those in need (secondharvest.ca). Throughout the year, our employees contribute and participate in many fundraising events, and all money raised is donated to this very important cause. Nelson is proud to be one of the top ten contributing companies in the GTA to the Second Harvest Lunch Money Day Program—our collective donations provided more than 10,000 nutritious meals to individuals and families in need.
For over 10 years, Nelson employees have very eagerly contributed to the Company’s annual Adopt-a-Family Campaign. This program supports our local outreach centre, the Birchmount Bluffs, in support of local families in need and families new to Canada. Employees anonymously “adopt families” and purchase requested and required items, fill food and clothes hampers beyond capacity, and provide financial donations which, in turn, are used to purchase food vouchers for every family. What began as a community event in support of one local family has, in a very short period of time, grown into an event that has employees engaged for over two months of the year to ensure deliveries in time for the holiday season. In 2014, our employees overwhelmingly supported 20 families comprising of 63 family members!
In addition to our adopted family program each year, Nelson employees donate gently-used items of clothing that our community outreach centre distributes to other needy families throughout the winter season.

Finance and Information Technology
A career in the Finance and Information Technology department means you could work in Accounting, Planning, or Information Technology. The Planning and Accounting departments are responsible for budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and internal control processes, and also plays an important role in all acquisitions. Our IT department is divided into Applications and Operations. The Computer Operations group provides the infrastructure for computer, telephone, and voice communication use. The Computer Applications group translates specific business requirements into practical applications through defined system analysis methodologies and system development processes.
The Operations Division is comprised of the Customer Support, Supply Chain Management, and Facilities Management functions. Leading performance in terms of order cycle time, accuracy, and call answer rate is the result of a continuous-improvement approach. The Supply Chain Management division consists of Distribution, Transportation, and Agency Inventory Service departments. Facilities Management is responsible for ensuring the working environment is productive, and that workplace safety standards are maintained in accordance with workplace and legislative requirements.
Media Production Services
The Media Production Services division is actively involved in the day-to-day publishing efforts of the business units. The division is comprised of the following functional areas: Premedia, Manufacturing, Technology, Rights Acquisition & Policy, and Content & Media Production.
